He struggled to compose there because most Americans knew him as an ethnomusicologist, pianist, and teacher, not as a composer. Schubert was born in 1797 in Vienna, Austria. In March 1904 Schoenberg organized with Alexander Zernlinsky the Vereinigung Schaffender Tonkünstler for the purpose of encouraging performances of new music.
