Pelléas remained the only opera of Debussy's to be performed, although he did write several others for his own amusement. And that theme unfolds throughout the course of the episode and we come back to it in the season finale. Debussy was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903, a year after his opera Pelleas et Melisande (1902). This second movement is famous as the opening theme for the Huntley-Brinkley Report, the precursor to NBC Nightly News.

He wrote many sacred works, including the Missa L’Homme Armé, and secular songs as well. Dmitri Shostakovich supported her and guided her down her “mistaken path,” which the Soviet government absolutely detested. There is the haunting little accompanying figure that begins the piece and occurs throughout, but over this Debussy has quite different levels: melodies, streams of harmonies that are rhythmically quite distinct. In addition, if you notice, the first two notes of many phrases have an interval of a perfect 4th, eg G to D(downward).

As with most gamelan instruments, the gender player must dampen each note as soon as the following note is played. I remember finding a Debussy book and learning the big ending section as fast as I could so I could feel what it was like to play something that majestic. First of all financially, because Johann, who was often under the influence of alcohol, was less and less capable of keeping up his role at the court.
