Published in 1832, this piece is one of Hokusai's most famous works and was the first in his series, 36 Views of Mount Fuji. One of the greatest pianists of the second half of the 20th Century. In addition, Hans Henkemans (Donemus Music Publishing) has been orchestrated them all, with partial performances with Royal Concertgebouw. When one instructor demanded to know what rules he was following, he replied, "My own pleasure".

He did pick up conducting posts, but in 1925 he suffered from a heart attack that forced him to curtail his activities. The bass starts with triplets and we see and accidental note in between the forth and fifth note. His early works show a clear development from the folk-influenced worlds of Szymanowski and Bartok in the Four Preludes for piano and Songs of Joy and Rhythm (1956) to the modernist techniques of Webern and Boulez in Epitafium (1958) and Symphony No.1 (1959), both premiered at the Warsaw Autumn Festival.

In 1861 he met Franz Liszt, who shared his Catholic faith, and together they worked with Richard Wagner to develop the German school. He wrote exciting music for orchestra: Fêtes galantes and a work called La Mer (The Sea) which he worked at while staying in Brighton on the south coast of England. He could be caustic and witty, sometimes sloppy and ill-informed. They had no wish to be in opposite camps, but their partisans decided otherwise.
