Only fragments remain of his work, as is the case with most of the poets. This was the reason that both 7th and 8th century in Europe were quite destitute in literary creation and scholarship. The nobility took increasing control of the countryside and the smaller towns. (Summa I.2.131–132) In short, according to this second argument, our ability to know with certainty is entirely dependent upon God's whim.
