These brain structures have been shown to be important for the sensory and higher order processing of auditory stimuli. For example, the fact that sleepiness increases progressively as sleep deprivation becomes more extended suggests that the degree of sleepiness may reflect the level of accumulated sleep propensity. The progressively stronger induction of AST is the first demonstration of a molecular response in the brain that is related to the duration of sleep loss. Physiological or psychological responses to stress first involve central release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the main regulator of the HPA axis.

This course will describe the basic characteristics of common feeds used in companion animal diets and the principles of utilizing these to meet animal requirements for maintenance and throughout the life-cycle. This phenomenon might be related to the inhibitory impact of SWS on cortisol secretion (48,51) or to preparatory mechanisms facilitating sleep onset since cortisol secretion has been shown to present an inverse relationship with SWA, with cortisol decreases preceding SWA increases by about 10 min (52).
