Spoleto is one of the most unique Italian cities in the Umbria region due to its Tower Bridge, or “Ponte delle Torri”. Umbria offers a varied landscape with hill-top towns such as Assisi, whose Basilica houses some of the greatest masterpieces in Italy, the vast sandy beaches and swaying reeds of Lake Trasimeno (Italys fourth largest lake!) and a rolling green countryside overflowing with olive groves and vineyards, which rival those of Tuscany.

Annie - Cortona June 2016 'This was an excellent holiday, coming at a difficult time for me. There are only a few tables inside and even fewer outside. This was quintessential Italy to me, the stuff of movies, but so much better. The route notes were generally good, although they do need regular revision, as some signs etc. had been changed or removed. He had remodelled the façade in a neoclassical style. This morning you will head to Ascoli Piceno, a pleasant drive about one hour and 20 minutes.

Amongst the town's medieval houses is the Picture Gallery, where you'll see Cimabue's poignant "Crucifixion." This memorable 12 day private Italy tour covers the country from Venice to Sorrento. Rebecca moved to Italy from Chicago in 1993 and shortly thereafter opened an agriturismo in her husband’s renovated family farmhouse at the foot of Mount Subasio near Assisi, Umbria. The clean kitchens were both well stocked with cooking utensils and wine glasses (which came in handy), there were good books and guides on every shelf, and we made great use of the outside patio and new grill.

The following morning, after our coffees and a little shopping time (for me) and running time (for the fellows), we had a quick—delicious—pizza lunch and caught a taxi back down to the parking lot at the base of the city walls. Dream houses among pine forests, bays and rocky cliffs diving into the sea Commonly known as the “pearl of the Tyrrhenian” surrounded and sheltered by nature, Castiglioncello has been an exclusive destination in Tuscany that has still preserved its original atmosphere and tranquillity.

The only kind I recommend is the soft and herby foccaccia. Assisi is just 15 minutes away and many wonderful Umbrian towns were an easy day-trip from there. While these anonymous artists carved their stone, Andrea Pisano was ushering in the Renaissance through the bronze doors of Florence's Baptistery. At Porchiano, the medieval walls feature a number of guard towers, and a beautiful little Romanesque church, San Simeone. Always lovely to receive a warm welcome at the hotels and find our room and luggage ready and waiting for us.

The original (long removed) was by Fra Giovanni Leonardelli In many ways, the Orvieto mosaics show the technical transition from Byzantine to the Renaissance practice. I wanted to create a recipe that would recreate the flavors and textures of porchetta in Italy – the simple but savory seasonings; the lean, moist center, still juicy, surrounded by a bit of fat and crispy skin – without buying (and then having to eat) an entire pig. We were shown exceptional hospitality and shared local birding knowledge with terrific generosity and good humour.

Sandwiched between Tuscany and Marche, Umbria is world famous not only for its wines, but also for its chocolates and truffles. Here are 4 reasons why you’ll want to visit Umbria #1 – Umbria is Tuscany without all the tourists. While the glistening mosaics make a stunning first impression, tourists quickly migrate to the lower-level pilasters which display bas-reliefs, separated by acanthus branches, depicting the Christian religious view of the history of man (including that which is to come!) in 2 wide and 2 thin marble "albums."
