Universe in the Dome Sunday, 12.01.2020

Dear Astro Enthusiast,

Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, invites you to a half day sky theatre Astronomy session at the planetarium, on Sunday, the 12th of January 2020, from 9:30 – 11:30 AM. The session will have discussions “Under the Stars” inside the sky theatre, and would cover basic positional Astronomy onwards to glimpses of cutting edge multi-wavelength/multi-messenger astronomy where we are now poised in our understanding of the Universe. The discussions will be for basic awareness. Please send a mail to nehruplanetarium@gmail.com and be there at the planetarium by 9:15 AM on the 12th.

Interested students and visitors are urged to see the website http://vigyansamagam.in/ to know about some of the cutting edge mega projects in Astronomy. Students should also register on the site (if not done already), if they wish to be a volunteer in an exciting exhibition in this connection, which will be at the National Science Center, Delhi from the 21st of January to the 18th of March 2020. This will be a tremendous learning opportunity to the students, if selected for volunteering for any of the megaprojects.

Vigyan Prasar in association with Nehru Planetarium is organizing popular lecture at 10:00 AM tomorrow 23 August 2016 at Sky theater at planetarium. Interested people can join the programme.

Marie-Curie Fellow – Europe’s most competitive and prestigious awards, Early Stage Researcher (ESR) fellowship within the project Grawiton – European Marie Curie Action INT at Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila, Italy.

Title of Talk: “The sound of black holes”

Abstract:

Recently mankind has detected first gravitational waves as predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years with his theory of General Relativity. This discovery was considered as one of important discovery in the centuary. One of the most challenging experiment physicists ever undertook, measuring the change in length smaller than 1/1000th of a diameter of proton over 4km. We will discuss how many challenges are overcome and how did we achieve this endeavor.

Dance of the Planets 26th Jul 2015

Dear Members,

Earlier this month the close conjunction of the two brightest planets Venus & Jupiter was observed all over the world. The planets came so close to each other that they were visible in the field of view of a telescope. The two planets will still be close together as they move into the morning sky, where both will meet-up with Mars later this year.

This Sunday Noon, let’s take a look at how the planets are moving in their orbits and what face and size do they present to the observers on the Earth in the remaining 2015. We will also look at other great observations that you can make this year like the Geminids Meteor Shower, Occultation of Aldebaran by Moon.

Telescope Open House

Nehru Planetarium, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, in collaboration with the Amateur Astronomers Association, Delhi, will be organising a Telescope Open House on the 4th of October 2014, with a sky theater interaction from 5:00 PM to 7PM and a skywatch with telescopes following that.

This event starts in the sky theater of the planetarium, ‘Under the stars”, with interactive discussions using full dome visuals, to be followed by an evening skywatch through telescopes. The sky theater interaction and discussions will be related to telescopes of all apertures – from a Galileoscope to the TMT. There will be presentations live as well as recorded. You will get to hear and interact with – seasoned amateur astronomers as well as professional astronomers working with cutting edge research in optical Astronomy.
During the day : From 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM, there will be some simple sun observing activities with amateur telescopes (through projection and also using solar filters).
The sky theater interaction will be a combination of live and recorded segments of content related to telescopes. The presentation will be aimed at an appreciation of gains in understanding celestial objects, from each substantive jump in aperture – through history – to contemporary times.
Evening skywatch will be through 8″ and 14″ aperture computerized Go To Celestron telescopes facilitated at the planetarium, by the National Council of Science Museums.

The Schedule:

12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM : Observing the Sun through projection and through solar filters
Location : In front of the planetarium
5:00 PM to 7:00 PM : Telescope Open House in the Planetarium sky theater
